We all love our pets, but your beloved Fluffy or Fido can cause a bit of a problem when it comes to selling your property; in particular, pet odors.
You may not be able to smell anything, but it is possible that you have simply become accustomed to the smell of your pet. Therefore, the first thing you should consider is enlisting a painfully truthful friend to ask you if he or she smells any pet odors.
If you have discovered that, in fact, your home may smell a bit too much like your favorite four-legged friend, then it may be time to do damage control. After all, you don’t want potential buyers to get turned off because of a little odor. Here’s what you can do:
- Begin by giving your doggie a good bath. Then, once he has been bathed, head directly to the carpets, as this is where most of your odors will likely be coming from. Often times, you can simply sprinkle baking soda over the rug and then vacuum it up. You can also purchase products that do the same thing.
- If the odor is a bit stronger then you will likely want to head straight to a steam cleaning. Consider purchasing a commercial carpet cleaner or pay a company to do the task.
- If your carpets have pet stains that simply won’t come out, it is in your best interest to tear the old carpeting out and replace it with new carpeting. This is one of those times when your investment in quality carpeting will most certainly pay for itself.
- If you have a cat, change the litter box frequently and remove the litter box from the house during showings and open houses. Even cat lovers don’t want to walk into a room and see a dirty litter box.
- If you have pets who like to lounge on the furniture, pay to have the furniture steam cleaned to remove hair and odor, and then cover the furniture with sheets or blankets. Simply remove the blankets from the furniture during showings or open houses and cover it back up otherwise.
