I think you just needed the additional anchor text to push you up. Another thing about the directories, or the 500 for $50 type, most of those will never get cached by Google. Especially since they are do deep and Google is discounting the overwhelming majority of them, except the high quality ones. No I’m pretty sure it wouldn’t be as effective. It took me from 13th in Google to 3rd.
